Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, the capital city.
