Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the land is built upon, including a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in several nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
