There are many contenders to claim the title of “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a new book, though, that honor belongs to the automated timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a modest merchant vessel required approximately 10 sawyers working over three months,” notes the author. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of processed timber could be produced in less than seven days.”
Thanks to their rapid automated saw, that turned timber to planks with almost no human effort, Dutch builders could build vessels faster than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, economic and cultural supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The Original True Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends Dávila, was “mankind’s initial true factory machine.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. A single part converted the rotary motion to up-and-down action for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed the spinning motion into a lateral movement advancing the timber to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead one precise increment each cycle.
“Every component seemed simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts in order that the machine operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every downward stroke while moving on every return motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of basic components.”
